Hungarians sent an extrodinary number of text messages to toast the new year this year, according to the Budapest Business Journal.  The number of messages sent on New Year  by users of the three largest carriers are more than triple the country’s population.

T-Mobile users sent 12 million text,  Telenor Magyarorszag users set almost 11 million and Vodafone Magyarorszag sent 8 million.  The total population of Hungary is about 10 million.

The article noted, however, that the number of texts had actually decreased this year in comparison with the past–possibly because more revelers were using social networks to ring in 2012.

No word yet on what the most popular emoticon was, but our money’s on :-*
