Piano Media’s national paywall, active for a year in Slovakia, has released their first month’s figures from the recent expansion into Slovenia. The paywall exceeded its goal of signing up 20,000 Slovenians, or 1 percent of the country, gaining 25,000 members and raising €26,000 in revenue.
The company said that it is earned 37 percent more per capita in Slovenia than they do in Slovakia. Piano Media is in negotiations with media companies across Europe and is planning to expand into 19 countries by the end of 2014.
Paywalls have become more common as the decline of print media causes media companies to struggle to make money off their reporting. Most famously, the New York Times implemented a paywall which has gained nearly half a million subscribers.
