Very soon, the capital of Georgia will be among the cities that have full wireless coverage.  This is expected to happen before the end of the year. Description: http://netprophet.tol.org/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif

That is a new initiative of the Tbilisi city hall.  Mayor Gigi Ugulava says that he knows many people “who say ‘who cares about Internet when I do not know how to feed my kid?’ That would really be a legitimate complaint. … We should be directed towards long-term tasks, and trust me, only education can help overcome poverty”, adding that free access to Internet was “as important as access to healthcare.”

The city government says that the Internet coverage will have a positive impact in helping to develop free speech since the Internet will give people unrestricted access to information. Also free Internet coverage will support tourism development bringing certain economic profits to the country.

Opponents say that the government should focus on social problems like heath care, unemployment, or other infrastructural projects than on free Internet coverage.
